For over 25 years, Seniors graduating from Carmel High School have participated in Sober Grad Night, a drug-and alcohol-free graduation event that promotes safety and celebrates students.
High school graduation is a time of celebration and promise but also a high-risk night for young people and others on the road. Statistically, it is one of the most dangerous nights for many teens. After the challenges of COVID-19, there is an even greater need to support positive choices for their mental health and well-being. The goal of holding a Sober Grad Night is to provide seniors a safe, healthy, and celebratory event that helps graduates avoid temptations that could lead to tragedy.
This year’s event for the Class of 2025 will be held on Friday, June 6, 2025, at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. The event includes transportation, a secure venue, food, entertainment, and chaperones, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all 200 graduating seniors.
The event as always is free to all graduates, enabling full participation regardless of financial circumstances. It is organized by the Padre Parents Club, a nonprofit supporting Carmel High School students, with the help of dedicated parent volunteers.
Request:
The Padre Parents Club has requested a $1,000 donation to support this year’s Sober Grad Night. This request falls outside the typical discretionary grant application period. While the Padre Parents Club plans to apply for a FY 25-26 Discretionary Grant, any future grant would support the Class of 2026.
Options for Council:
Council may consider adoption of the attached Resolution approving a $1,000 contribution to the 2025 Sober Grad Night. Alternately, the Council could provide other direction to staff.
