For over 15 years, the Monterey County Environmental Health Bureau has successfully partnered with the City and other local municipalities to implement a countywide Used Oil and Filter Recycling Program. This program is funded by an Oil Payment Program (OPP) grant from the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle). Monterey County Environmental Health Bureau has served as the administrator of the OPP on behalf of all cities and the unincorporated area of the County, resulting in the leveraging of resources and consistency in outreach efforts.
In Fiscal Year (FY) 2019/20, the County collected 194,103 gallons of oil and 46,170 oil filters for proper disposal. Over the past FY, the County ran over 800 ads through various media outlets, including radio, newspaper and online, organized 9 used oil filter collection events, and hosted 5 outreach events. Additional program highlights are included in the County’s letter to the City (Attachment #1).
